Week 3: John DiComandrea
(Wakefield, MA.)
This week's athlete of the week is former BAA and current New England 65+ Club member John DiComandrea. I ran into 'Deek' this week at the Larry Robinson 5k in Andover, MA. At the ripe young age of 79, he ran to a 30:19 (9:46 pace) on a very cold and windy morning.
Deek is the longtime Wakefield Cross Country and Track and Field coach who has been running competatively in his respected age groups for the past 60+ years. I first got to know Coach Deek as the woodshop teacher when I was in jr. high and then had the great pleasure of running for him during my high school years.
Some of many many highlights of Deek's career include:
1952 United States 15K (Road) Champion (info)
1986 MSTCA Hall of Fame inductee
Notable Boston Marathon Results
1949 - 27th overall - 3:01:31
1952 - 16th overall - 3:12:01
1954 - 23rd overall - 3:01:15
1955 - 12th overall - 2:37:08
